Hakes Lose Out to Truro in Cup

Truro 17 v 9 St Ives

Following St Ives recent emphatic victory over local rivals Truro, in the Western Counties West league, the two sides faced each other once again in the Cornwall Knockout Cup last Saturday. This time the Hakes travelled to the capital of the county in what was the quarter final stage of the competition.

St Ives travelled with a much changed side for this game; Joel Stevens came in at hooker with Jonathan Wright starting alongside him at prop. Liam Jolly returned at scrum half with Sam Carter moving to full back. Jordan Gott resumed his roll at fly half, with Lewis Thomas starting in the centre and Joe Rouncefield started on the wing.

The game began in a very competitive manner with St Ives determined to show their win in the previous match was no fluke and Truro were keen not to show the defensive frailties that cost them so dear at Alexandra Road. The game was only 3 minutes old when Jake Champion kicked the home side into the lead from a penalty kick and 10 minutes later Jordan Gott returned the favour with a penalty kick of his own to level the scores at 3 points each.

The pattern was set for the remainder of the first half with Champion and Gott exchanging penalty kicks until the referee blew the whistle for half time with the penalty count 3 for Truro and 2 for St Ives making the half time score 9 points to 6 in favour of the home side.

The second half began with Truro looking more likely to open the scoring and they pressed St Ives back into their own half on numerous occasions. The Hakes defence was holding firm, however, and the visitors defended their line well to prevent the home side scoring any tries.

In the 58th minute it was once again the boot of Gott that levelled the scores at 9 points each to set up the final quarter of the match perfectly.

It wasn’t to be for the Hakes in this match despite some more valiant work in defence. Truro went 12 points to 9 up in the 69th minute once again from the boot of Champion and they finished off the job in the 75th minute when they squeezed in for the only try of the match wide on their right to make the final score Truro 17, St Ives 9.

So it is Truro that march forward into the semi-final of this year’s Cornwall Knockout Cup but they must play hosts to St Ives again early in March next year…..!!!

The Hakes are back in league action this coming Saturday with an away trip to Wadebridge; kick off in North Cornwall is scheduled for 2:30pm. Any travelling support would be very welcome.
