Hakes Defeated Heavily

Chew Valley 89 v 14 St Ives

St Ives began their 2019/20 South West One West campaign with a long away trip to Chew Valley near Bristol. Spirits were high on the team bus on the long journey up the M5, but when the game kicked off the Hakes were brought back to the reality of South West One West rugby with a bump.

Newly promoted Chew Valley made the perfect start with a converted try after only 7 minutes. They swiftly added another before the Hakes asserted themselves and scored a try of their own. Ben Taylor at the back of a driving maul dotted down for the score with James Tucker converting to make the score 21-7.

The remainder of the half saw the home side take control of the match and the first half ended with the Hakes trailing by 35 points to 7.

The second half was no better for the St Ives players with the home side dominant. Debutant Nik Wielbo did manage to snatch a try out wide on the left which was again converted in fine style by fellow debutant James Tucker.

But it was too little too late for the travelling St Ives players as when the final whistle blew the home side had run in 13 tries with only one conversion missed.

St Ives will go back to the training pitch this week mindful of the fact that they need to kick start their season this coming weekend when they host another side from the Bristol area Cleeve. Kick off at Alexandra Road is scheduled for 3:00pm any home support would be very welcome.
