New Seasons Starts With Double Header
Saturday 2nd September 2023 Colts v Helston 12:45pm KO
St Ives v Pirates Amateurs 3:00pm KO
A new seasons heralds the return of Colts rugby to St Ives after almost ten years. Helston will be hosted for a lunchtime kick off with memories of days gone by when the thrill of playing as a youngster in front of a growing crowd excites the mind.
Our Senior Opponents
Pirates Amateurs are a relatively new club, borne out of the birth of Pirates RFC in the newly created professional era and the demise of Mounts Bay, to some degree at least. The aim was for local lads not good enough for professional rugby to get a game. Eventually this led to being accepted as a new club into the league system as late as 2010-11. They were runners up to Veor, no less, and defeated Wessex 29:20 in the play off to gain promotion into the Cornwall & Devon league. Here they remained for a decade.
Pirates Ams were hailed champions of Cornwall & Devon league in 2021-22, winning 24 out of 26 matches and ending on a massive 116 points. Last year they rose to fourth place in the newly formed Counties 1 Tribute Western West league with 13 wins and a points total of 72.
Previous Results
Rather surprisingly, the teams have met only rarely. In seasons 2012-13 and 2015-16 their paths crossed. The last time the clubs met was here at St Ives when The Hakes eventually came out winners by the smallest of margins 22:21. A full account of that match is available from a previous blog here >>> . That was the season St Ives were promoted to Western Counties West as runners up to Teignmouth.
Pre Season
In their only pre-season friendly St Ives battled successfully against Redruth for a 14:22 win. Meanwhile Pirates Ams had the better of St Just 33:10. This promises to be a stern test for The Hakes and will bring realistic evidence of where our talent sits within this league. Your support, as always, is most welcome, and the clubhouse awaits you.
