We are so pleased to announce we have been awarded Ā£11,235 of National Lottery funding from Sport England for our programmes to improve pathways for women and girls, thanks to the Movement Fund.
š What is Sport Englandās Movement Fund?
The Movement FundĀ is a major Sport England initiative investing over Ā£20 million each yearĀ of National Lottery and government money into grassroots sport and physical activity. Its purpose is simple: to help more people move more often, with a strong focus on tackling longāstanding inequalities in participation.
In April 2024, Sport England redesigned its funding system to make applying easier and to prioritise communities with the greatest need. The Movement Fund is now the single entry point for most smallāscale community sport funding.
šÆ What the Movement Fund Supports
Sport England funds projects that increase physical activity, especially among people who face barriers such as gender inequality, low income, disability, ethnicityārelated barriers, or limited local opportunities.
Eligible projects include:
Creating new activity sessions or pathwaysĀ ā such as beginner programmes, development squads, or targeted outreach.
Introducing The St Ives RFC Herrings Women's Tag Rugby Team
During the last season the club saw 44 women and girls of ages 12-65 years having a go at tag rugby and thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Whether you've played rugby before or have never picked up a rugby ball, everyone is welcome. Tag rugby is a great way to improve fitness, build confidence and enjoy being part of a friendly and supportive group.

The Herrings have gone from strength to strength and are a fantastic example of the club's commitment to growing the women's and girls' game, with female participation continuing to flourish across the club.

The detail that 44 women and girls aged 12ā65 took part in tag rugby during the last season really stood out to me, because it shows how broad the appeal can be when a club creates a space that isnāt limited by age or previous rugby experience. I also found the connection between the Sport England funding and the development of pathways for women and girls interesting, since the impact seems to be about participation and community as much as the sport itself. It made me think about how inclusive programmes can bring together people with very different backgrounds, much like the varied experiences students encounter in fields such as engineering when using resources such as a Engineering Assignment Helperā¦
