Colts Defeat Saltash
St Ives colts 24 - 12 Saltash
St Ives travelled up to Saltash for an important fixture for both sides. Both teams looked determined from arrival.
The game got underway and for the first 5 minutes of the game it was a very even battle. However, St Ives had most of the possession and were pushing into their opposition's half and finally made a break through when inside centre Soul Hardy made a good run and then popping it off to Peter Skeggs playing an unfamiliar position of outside centre to finish off the well work try. The score stood at 5-0 as it was unconverted.
St Ives continued to push hard looking for a second and on many occasions came close, but couldn't find the end product. St Ives used their good pod work which has worked well for them when used this season. This led to another break for Peter Skeggs to grab his second of the game using his pace to run around the Saltash back line. The try was converted making the score 12-0.
Saltash replied quickly from kick off as the ball spilled out of a ruck and the Saltash player ran over to score their first of the game. 12-5.
Both sides struggled to get into a flow because of the amount of scrums in the game. There were several controversial decisions stopping any major opportunities from happening.
The away side, St Ives, pushed hard with their forwards with Cam Lawrence leading a powerful maul allowing scrum half, Charlie Cannon to pass off to Billy Wilkins to dive over the line. The conversion was converted well from distance. The half time whistle quickly followed. The half time score was 17-5.
In the second half the game continued much like the first half for the first 15 minutes with all most of the rugby played in the centre of the pitch. A lot of stoppages occurred, slowing the game down. A huge part of the game consisted of scrums and line outs.
St Ives made the first breakthrough in the second half when their backs got it out to winger, Kieran Sampson for a 40 yard sprint to the line. This try was unconverted.
In the final 10 minutes of the game Saltash pushed hard into St Ives half and for the first time in the game looked threatening when attacking. They were awarded a penalty try when a kick was bouncing awkwardly and a controversial off the ball decision led to the penalty try.
The full time whistle went and St Ives were happy with their first win of the season! The travel up to Saltash seemed worth it. Even though St Ives has struggled with injuries this season, hopefully this is the start of more good things to come.
