Hakes Defeat Truro

Truro 13 v St Ives 38

Last Saturday St Ives travelled to Truro for their latest Western Counties West League game. Back in the side for this game was Harry Parton in the second row, but other than that the side was mostly unchanged from the win over Torquay a fortnight ago.

With the weather improved over the last few days and the snow cleared it was game on at Truro and when the match kicked off the players and spectators were treated to warm sunshine. St Ives began the game well and soon began to put pressure on the Truro defence. In only the 3rd minute St Ives centre Tom Nicholas broke through the defence to look like he was going to score the opening try of the match only to lose control of the ball over the line and miss the opportunity.

From the resulting scrum St Ives regained control of the play and used the power of their forwards to push over the line allowing flanker Cameron Bone to score the try. Rhys Brownfield added the conversion to give the Hakes a 7 points to nil lead with 5 minutes played.

The next period of play saw Truro come back into the match trough a trio of penalties. The first on 15 minutes was missed, but the next two in the 19th and 22nd minutes respectively were successfully converted to bring Truro to within one point of St Ives at 7 points to 6.

The remainder of the first half saw St Ives play with confidence and defend with a belief that has developed in their game this season. This gave them the platform that enabled them to take control of the match with two more tries. The first of these came in the 29th minute through number 8 Martyn Lawrance. That score went unconverted, but in the 35th minute full back Joe Parma wriggled his way through the home defence in typical fashion to score a try that was converted by Brownfield to make the score at half time Truro 6, St Ives 19.

The second half began and it wasn’t long before St Ives centre Tom Nicholas made amends for his error early in the match when he went over for St Ives 4th try in the 56th minute. Again Brownfield added the conversion to put the Hakes in control of the match at 26 points to 6.

With the bonus point secured St Ives may have been guilty of easing the pressure slightly on their opponents. In the 70th minute Truro took full advantage and scored their only try of the match to give the home crowd something to cheer about. But St Ives put an end to any ideas that Truro had of getting something from the game with two late tries from their left winger Pete Mabbott in the 73rd and 78th minutes respectively which put the result beyond doubt. One of the tries was converted to make the final score Truro 13, St Ives 38.

Cup match to be re-arranged again

As the league programme has priority over the cup, St Ives’ semi-final at St Austell is postponed. This is to facilitate St Austell’s visit to Crediton. Keep on the lookout for any updates on this website.

This win extends St Ives’ lead at the top of the league table to 12 points over Devonport Services with St Austell a further 3 points back in third but with a game in hand over the top two sides. With 5 games remaining St Ives need 16 points to be promoted as champions at the end of the season. They have three home games; against Burnham, Crediton and Falmouth. The two away games are at Devonport and Chard.
