St Ives Squeeze Out a Win in Cup Semi Final

St Austell 24:26 St Ives

A cold, but mostly dry Easter Saturday greeted the teams and supporters for the Cornwall Cup semi-final at Tregorrick Park this afternoon., on this the third time of asking. St Austell had been involved in Intermediate Cup and league postponements on the other dates originally set.

After sailing into a 14:0 lead early on, both attacks in the red zone, The Hakes were well in control. An unfortunate error at the restart was compounded by further misdemeaners and St Austell began a fight back. The latter part of the first half was all the home side, albeit against a stiff breeze.

Mid way throught he second half the scores were 17:17. Each team had had a player 'binned'. Both teams were using the benefit of six replacements on the bench. St Ives appeared to have the game sorted, eight points in front and a couple of minutes to go. Again compounded errors put The Hakes under much self made pressure. St Austell brought the scores to within a point. An innefficient clearance went straight up in the air, but somehow St Ives held on. If you are a nail biter, you would have chewed off your fingers.

The game was well marshalled by Nigel Hambley and played in good spirit.

The final is due to be played on Saturday 28th April at Camborne RFC, so keep the date. Full report after the weekend.
